Focusing on how masculinities and gender norms shape violence and gender relations.

In celebration of World Environment Day, Global Greengrants Fund approached our studio to create a vibrant and meaningful illustration. The goal was to encapsulate the theme of grassroots power and its intrinsic connection to the Earth’s well-being, reflecting the organization’s mission to support environmental justice movements worldwide.

We aimed to convey the strength and resilience of community-led initiatives that drive environmental change.

This project was an inspiring opportunity to blend art with advocacy, creating a piece that not only celebrates World Environment Day but also amplifies the crucial role of grassroots movements in environmental justice. Our illustration serves as a visual testament to the power of community action, indigenous wisdom and the profound impact it has on our planet’s future, human and non-human members of our planet.

We live in an interconnected world, yet capitalism often gives us a siloed, individualistic perspective, pitting us against each other. Indigenous wisdom teaches that healing happens through community and collaboration among all elements on our planet. Earth is a sentient being, and everything on it is alive.

We believe in the transformative power of visual storytelling. Through projects like this, we aim to inspire and mobilize action towards a more just and sustainable world.

Central Figures:

The central figures in the illustration represent a diverse group of individuals united in their commitment to protect and nurture the Earth. Each character symbolizes the different communities Global Greengrants Fund supports, including women, Indigenous peoples, youth, and other marginalized groups.

Nature and Wildlife:

Surrounding the central figures, we incorporated elements of nature and wildlife to highlight the interconnectedness of all living beings. The presence of animals, plants, and celestial elements reinforces the idea that human actions are deeply intertwined with the natural world.

Earth and Water:

The Earth held by the central figure and the flowing water symbolize life, nourishment, and the continuous flow of grassroots efforts that sustain environmental health. The water also represents the life-giving rivers and oceans that grassroots movements often strive to protect.

Sun and Light:

The radiant sun at the top of the illustration signifies hope, enlightenment, and the transformative power of collective action. It illuminates the path towards a sustainable future, guided by the wisdom and efforts of grassroots communities.

Flora:

The inclusion of vibrant plants and flowers highlights the growth and blossoming of grassroots initiatives. These elements signify resilience, renewal, and the beauty that community efforts bring to the world.

Color Palette and Style:

We chose a rich, dynamic color palette to evoke a sense of urgency, passion, and hope. The bold colors and intricate details invite viewers to engage deeply with the illustration and reflect on the powerful message it conveys.
