Changing One Thing Can Change Everything

Sometimes unexpected change can be instituted by the smallest of actions.

What we set out to do

The Butterfly Project of The YP Foundation is based on the underlying philosophy of The Butterfly Effect, that sometimes unexpected change can be instituted by the smallest of actions.

The YP Foundation is a youth-led organisation that facilitates young people’s feminist and rights-based leadership on issues of health equity, gender justice, sexuality rights, and social justice. They ensure that young people have the information, capacity, and opportunities to inform and lead the development and implementation of programmes and policies that impact their lives and are recognised as skilled and aware leaders of social change.

Why water became our source of inspiration and meaning making

The Butterfly Project provided young people with a platform to showcase their creativity through the avenues of film and/or literature. The project builds young feminist leadership among adolescent girls, and young women to advocate for their rights related to gender, sexual and reproductive health and rights, early child forced marriage, and livelihoods using digital media.

It aims to increase awareness of social, environmental, political, and current issues that young people are passionate about by giving them a platform to put forward and clarify their perspectives and opinions through mediums of film and writing.

To this end, the YP Foundation provides young people with the required financial and infrastructural resources, encouraging them to question and comprehend established concepts and information while furthering their creativity, vision and talent.
We were involved with the foundation to create the invitation for the Butterfly Project.

Highlighting the sisterhood and solidarity among young women—a world that was charged with waves of changes stirred by fluttering butterflies—because one change can change everything.

In the end, the project engaged with young women who were visibly empowered and demonstrated behaviour changes. They were able to recognise gender as a social construct and see how being a girl impacted their lives. The Butterfly Project Film Series & The Bridge – A Literary Magazine methods stirred young people’s increased access to information, services, and leadership opportunities, thereby enabling them to understand and realise their rights.
